The Sudan Doctors Syndicate announced on Saturday that 22 people were killed and 17 others injured due to artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of El Fasher in North Darfur State.
In a statement, the “El Fasher Resistance Committees” said, “So far, there have been 97 casualties, including both injured and dead, among the citizens of El Fasher due to RSF shells.”
The Sudan Doctors Syndicate reported that “the RSF continues its violations against medical and civilian facilities in El Fasher, targeting Nabd Al-Hayat Hospital with a drone.”
They added, “The RSF has resumed artillery shelling, this time targeting El Fasher Teaching Hospital, which has been out of service since the start of the war.”
The syndicate clarified that “the deliberate shelling of El Fasher, the central market area, and residential homes resulted in the death of 22 civilians and injured at least 17 others.” They noted that “efforts are ongoing to determine the exact number of casualties.”
Since May 10, El Fasher has witnessed clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF, despite international warnings about fighting in the city, which serves as the hub for humanitarian operations across all Darfur states.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Washington had called on the Sudanese army and the RSF to participate in ceasefire talks starting on August 14 in Switzerland.
Sudan has been engulfed in intense fighting between the army and the RSF since mid-April 2023 due to political and security disputes. According to the United Nations, the conflict has resulted in approximately 13,900 deaths and over 8 million displaced people and refugees, creating a dire humanitarian situation.
