The Pentagon announced on Thursday that more than 20 countries have agreed to participate in the new alliance led by the United States to protect trade movements in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks originating in Yemen.
However, the total number of countries joining these efforts indicates that at least eight of them have chosen not to publicly disclose their participation, reflecting the political sensitivities surrounding the operation amid escalating regional tensions due to the Israeli aggression on Gaza.
Major General Patrick Ryder stated that Greece and Australia have also joined the alliance.
He added that other countries will be allowed to participate, with the decision on their participation left to them.
The US launched Operation “Guardian of Prosperity” this week, stating that over 12 countries have agreed to participate in an effort that will include joint patrols in the Red Sea waters near Yemen.
Ryder described the operation as a “coalition of the willing.”
He further explained during a press conference that this participation may include ships, personnel, or other types of support.
The crisis in the Red Sea has escalated with the intensification of the war in Gaza, which has led to the death of nearly 20,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in the region.
Meanwhile, the Houthis have increased their attacks in the Red Sea and threatened to target all ships heading to Israel, warning shipping companies against dealing with Israeli ports.
These attacks have disrupted a major trade route connecting Europe and North America to Asia through the Suez Canal, resulting in a sharp increase in container shipping costs as companies seek alternative, often longer routes for their cargo.
