The National Emergency Management Agency in the Sultanate of Oman announced on Sunday that 12 deaths have been recorded due to people being swept away in their vehicles following heavy rains caused by the current weather conditions in the country, according to the official Oman News Agency.
Among the deceased, the agency reported, were “9 students from the Samad Al Shaan province, in addition to one expatriate.”
The agency further stated, “The search is still ongoing for 5 individuals in the Mudhaibi province.”
Several governorates in Oman experienced varying levels of heavy rainfall due to the weather conditions, which began affecting most of the provinces and are expected to continue until next Wednesday.
Oman, located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, experiences a range of weather conditions, including occasional heavy rainfall during the monsoon season.
While the country’s rugged terrain and arid climate make it generally prone to flash floods, the infrastructure for managing such emergencies has been steadily improving in recent years.
Despite these improvements, severe weather events can still result in casualties and significant damage to property and infrastructure.
