The Iraqi Ministry of Defense has reported the death of an officer and the injury of another due to a technical malfunction causing a plane to crash during the execution of a support mission for the security plan related to the elections of provincial councils in Tuz Khurmatu, northern Iraq.

According to the ministry’s statement, “During the execution of a mission to support and assist the security plan for provincial council elections, a technical malfunction occurred in one of the (civilian Bell) aircraft, causing the plane to crash shortly after takeoff from Heliwa Airport.”

The statement further noted that the incident resulted in the martyrdom of Colonel Pilot Marwan Jalal, the aircraft’s commander, and the injury of Captain Pilot Alaa Salman. Both were transported to Tuz Khurmatu Hospital.

This tragic incident highlights the challenges and risks faced by security personnel in Iraq as they carry out their duties to ensure the safety and security of important events like provincial council elections.

The Ministry of Defense expressed its condolences for the loss of Colonel Pilot Marwan Jalal and wished a swift recovery to Captain Pilot Alaa Salman.

As Iraq prepares for the upcoming elections, security remains a top priority, and incidents like this underscore the dedication and sacrifice of those working to maintain stability and uphold the democratic process in the country.
