The British newspaper Mirror reported that Zinedine Zidane is a potential candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s manager following Klopp’s decision to leave the Reds. The announcement by the German coach is expected to lead to widespread speculation about his successor, especially as the English club begins its search for a new manager.
The Mirror highlighted that Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owning entity, is already considering its options. Among the potential candidates, former Liverpool midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso is a favorite according to some sources.
Additionally, Brighton’s manager Roberto De Zerbi is mentioned, but Zidane stands out as a strong contender for the position, especially since the French coach is currently without a contract with any team.
The paper also noted that Zidane’s recent decision to decline the coaching role for the Algerian national team leaves him open to opportunities, including the prestigious position at Liverpool, where he could bring his experience of winning three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid.
Under Klopp’s management, Liverpool secured their first Premier League title in 30 years during the 2019/20 season, setting a record for the earliest title win with seven matches to spare. This victory was a part of an impressive campaign where Liverpool matched the 32 wins achieved by Manchester City in previous seasons. Klopp’s Liverpool also triumphed in the UEFA Champions League during the 2018/19 season, defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the final. This win was complemented by victories in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, showcasing Liverpool’s dominance in both European and global football arenas.
In addition to these major trophies, Klopp’s Liverpool won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the 2021/22 season. His approach to football, often described as “heavy metal” due to its intensity and forward-pressing style, has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success during his tenure. Klopp’s influence extends beyond the pitch, as he is also known for his charismatic leadership and ability to connect with fans and players alike.
Throughout his time at Liverpool, Klopp’s teams have been characterized by their high-energy play, resilience, and ability to perform under pressure, attributes that have contributed to the club’s numerous successes and near-misses in various competitions. Klopp’s legacy at Liverpool is further highlighted by the numerous personal accolades he has received, including multiple FIFA Coach of the Year awards.
