Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met on Friday with US military leaders and over 50 allied nations in Germany to request more weapons support. This comes as the U.S. announced an additional $250 million in security assistance for Ukraine.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin highlighted the meeting’s importance during a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s war with Russia, as Ukraine pushes forward with its first offensive operations and faces threats from Russian forces near the critical hub of Pokrovsk in the Donbas region.
Although Ukraine’s surprise attack in Russia’s Kursk region has put Russia on the defensive, President Putin remains focused on capturing Pokrovsk, a city crucial for Ukrainian rail and supply lines. Losing it could endanger more Ukrainian cities, Mr. Austin noted.
Recent Russian airstrikes have reignited Zelensky’s calls for the US to provide advanced weaponry for deeper strikes inside Russia. While discussions focused on bolstering air defense and artillery, Zelensky emphasized the need for long-range capabilities, stating on Telegram that stronger decisions are necessary for achieving peace.
The meeting also centered on strengthening Ukraine’s defense industrial base as the end of US President Joe Biden’s term approaches.
