The Tunisian Ministry of Defense announced on Monday that it has received four US aircraft designed for reconnaissance and surveillance operations.
The aircraft, C-208 models, were delivered to the military base at El Aouina in Tunis. The ceremony was attended by Defense Minister Khaled El Souhaili and US Ambassador to Tunisia John Hood.
El Souhaili stated that the aircraft are equipped with advanced systems that will enhance the capabilities of the Tunisian military in combating terrorism and transnational organized crime.
He noted that the delivery of these aircraft is part of a bilateral military cooperation program agreed upon during the 34th session of the Joint Military Committee held in 2020.
Since 2015, Tunisia has been designated as a Major Non-NATO Ally by the United States, a status that provides it with expanded opportunities for military cooperation, including training, equipment, and intelligence sharing.
Since the Arab Spring of 2011, Tunisia has faced various security challenges, including the threat of terrorism and organized crime.
The country has been working to modernize its military and enhance its security measures to address these threats effectively.
In recognition of Tunisia’s strategic importance and its efforts in counterterrorism, the United States designated it as a Major Non-NATO Ally in 2015.
This designation allows Tunisia to benefit from increased military cooperation, including advanced training, equipment, and intelligence sharing.
The US has been actively supporting Tunisia’s security sector as part of its broader strategy to stabilize the region and counteract the influence of extremist groups. The addition of these C-208 aircraft is a significant step in bolstering Tunisia’s capabilities to safeguard its borders and maintain internal security.
