The Biden Administration is reportedly planning to reinstate the Houthi rebels in Yemen as specially designated global terrorists, a move revealed by a U.S. official and reported by Reuters, as per Al-Qahira Al-Youm News.
In response to disruptive Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping routes, the U.S. military has launched airstrikes in Yemen targeting anti-ship ballistic missiles in areas under Houthi control.
The Iran-aligned Houthi group has threatened to expand its attacks to include U.S. vessels in retaliation against American and British strikes on their positions in Yemen.
Following these incidents, President Joe Biden labeled the Houthis as a “terrorist group” after coordinated attacks by U.S. and British warplanes, ships, and submarines across Yemen.
These developments come days after the United States announced the formation of a maritime defense alliance named “Guardian of Prosperity”.
This alliance, joined by 22 countries, aims to safeguard commercial navigation in the Red Sea from Houthi assaults.
The announcement of this coalition followed a series of attacks by the Houthis using drones and missiles on vessels they claim are “linked to Israel,” posing a significant threat to global trade.
