A Palestinian delegation is gearing up for a significant visit to Washington, D.C., aimed at discussions regarding political reforms and governmental overhauls.
This initiative follows an invitation extended by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to both the newly appointed Palestinian Prime Minister, Dr. Mohammed Mustafa, and the Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hussein Al-Sheikh.
Officials revealed in press statements that Blinken extended the invitation to al-Sheikh and Mustafa during a recent telephone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The Palestinian delegation is expected to head to the US capital after the conclusion of the Eid al-Fitr festivities.
According to sources, the delegation plans to engage with U.S. officials on various political fronts, including recognition of the Palestinian statehood.
Additionally, they aim to address reform commitments pledged by the new Palestinian government, the ongoing financial crisis affecting the Palestinian Authority, and opportunities for the resumption of US support, which had been halted during the previous administration of President Donald Trump.
Blinken assured Abbas of the US administration’s commitment to collaborating with the Palestinian Authority in addressing congressional obstacles hindering American financial support. Furthermore, he pledged to exert pressure on the Israeli government to cease the financial deductions initiated since 2019, which significantly impact the functioning of the Palestinian government.
