The US envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, has issued a stark warning about the escalating war in Sudan, cautioning that it could expand and threaten the security and stability of the entire region.
He attributed the continuation of the conflict to “negative political forces,” led by figures from the former regime and the National Congress Party, who are pressuring the Sovereign Council, headed by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to persist in the conflict in hopes of regaining power.
During an electronic briefing to journalists worldwide yesterday, Perriello urged both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces to cease hostilities, emphasizing that “no one can achieve a military victory in this war.”
Perriello highlighted the involvement of “negative forces,” who, he claimed, have a vested interest in the conflict’s continuation.
He further explained, “We’ve observed certain political forces, such as officials from the former regime and the National Congress Party, who understand that they lack popular support.
Therefore, they rely on the war to continue their efforts to secure governmental or political power.”
