Following President Joe Biden’s commitment to aid Gaza, the US Army has mobilized a vessel to deliver humanitarian support to the area, as confirmed by Central Command (CENTCOM) this Sunday.
The deployment of General Frank S. Besson from Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia occurred shortly after US President Biden’s pledge during his State of the Union address to facilitate aid via a temporary pier.
This aid comes in response to dire warnings from the U.N. about the risk of famine affecting the 2.3 million inhabitants of Gaza, five months after the escalation of hostilities triggered by Hamas militants.
With Gaza lacking port facilities, the US plans to initially utilize Cyprus for cargo screening, involving Israeli officials to bypass the need for security inspections in Gaza.
The blockade, enforced by the Israeli navy since 2007 following Hamas’s ascendancy in Gaza, has significantly hindered direct sea-based aid deliveries, exacerbating the displacement and aid delivery challenges faced by Gaza’s population.
