The U.S. Army is deploying THAAD missile defense systems in the Middle East. This move comes following recent escalations throughout the region.
U.S. Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, stated on Saturday that he has activated the deployment of High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems. Additionally, extra Patriot missile battalions are being placed at various locations to bolster protection for American forces.
Austin emphasized that the readiness order aims to “enhance its rapid response capabilities.” Both the THAAD and Patriot systems are designed to intercept short and medium-range ballistic missiles.
In a statement, Austin mentioned these steps would strengthen regional deterrence measures. It will also amplify the protective measures for U.S. forces in the area and assist in Israel’s defense.
He added, “Following detailed discussions with President Biden on Iran’s recent escalations and its proxies in the Middle East, I’ve directed several additional measures to reinforce the Defense Department’s posture in the region.”
