The United States has expressed “deep concern” over the renewed violence in the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

In a statement issued by the US Embassy in Kinshasa on Saturday, the embassy expressed regret over the escalation of clashes between the armed self-defense alliance known as “Wazalendo” and the rebel group “March 23” (23 Mars), resulting in loss of life, property damage, and the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians.

The US Embassy called on the government of the DR Congo, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), and the regional force under the East African Community to intensify their efforts to protect civilians in a coordinated manner.

The statement emphasized that the United States views the crisis in eastern DR Congo as requiring a political rather than a military solution.

“We urge all parties to fully commit to the agreements reached under recent regional mediation efforts, including the ceasefire that has been in place since March 7, 2023,” the statement added.

The United States affirmed that it will use all available diplomatic tools to isolate and condemn those who undermine peace and security in eastern DR Congo.

In the same context, the US Embassy urged relevant authorities to allow urgent humanitarian access to affected civilians without hindrance.

The embassy also called on donors to fund emergency assistance for the populations in affected areas, acknowledging the increased burden on humanitarian response due to a severe funding shortfall.

The recent armed confrontations erupted earlier this month between self-defense groups (Wazalendo) loyal to the Kinshasa government and the rebel group “March 23” on multiple fronts in the northern Kivu region of eastern DR Congo, resulting in civilian casualties, property damage, and a new wave of displacement for those fleeing the fighting.

The Kivu region in eastern DR Congo has experienced recurrent violence and conflict, with various armed groups operating in the area. These clashes have led to significant humanitarian challenges, including displacement, loss of life, and disrupted access to essential services.

The recent escalation of violence and the displacement of civilians highlight the pressing need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and the protection of vulnerable populations. International actors, including the United States, have expressed their commitment to supporting peace efforts in the region and providing humanitarian assistance to those affected by the violence.
