US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the United States and its partners from different countries are working to support the education of Afghan women after the Taliban took over the government.

Blinken – in remarks reported by the American channel “Al-Hurra” on Tuesday – referred to the participation of various American universities and technology companies in supporting the education of Afghan women.

It is noteworthy that UNESCO has strongly condemned the Taliban’s decision to prevent women from attending universities. This decision was issued after several months of excluding girls from secondary education. UNESCO explained that this will have dire and irreversible consequences for the social, cultural and economic development of Afghanistan. Afghanistan cannot make any progress as long as half of its population is prevented from continuing their education and participating in public life.

Afghanistan had witnessed great progress in the field of education between 2001 and 2018, with the support of UNESCO and the international community. The number of women in higher education has almost doubled, from 5,000 in 2001 to 90,000 in 2019.

Women have reached positions of responsibility in the fields of medicine, law, journalism and politics, and have played an influential role in transforming the country.
