The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that about 300,000 of its students in the Gaza Strip have been out of school for nine months. UNRWA emphasized in a post on its X platform that education is fundamental, and with over 700 schools across the region, the agency reaches hundreds of thousands of students. Despite these challenges, UNRWA’s teams continue to provide psychological and social support to the children of Gaza.

The ongoing Israeli military aggression in Gaza since October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 38,193 deaths, predominantly women and children, and injured more than 87,903 others, with thousands still under the rubble.

Since the conflict began on October 7, UNRWA has been actively involved in responding to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The agency has been providing essential services including healthcare and psychological support, despite significant challenges. Damage to facilities and disruptions at border crossings have affected the supply of medical and food resources, yet UNRWA has managed to keep some health centers operational and continue food and water distribution.

UNRWA has managed to maintain operational some of its health centers, providing essential medical care and psychosocial support services. These efforts are critical given the large number of internally displaced persons and the ongoing health needs arising from the conflict. Additionally, UNRWA has been addressing the educational disruption by ensuring continued learning opportunities wherever possible, highlighting the agency’s crucial role in providing lifesaving support and addressing basic needs amidst ongoing hostilities.
