The United Nations (UN) has expressed deep concern over the discovery of a mass grave in the Gaza Strip. The UN is calling for a trustworthy investigation into the incident site.
According to a statement from Gaza’s Civil Defense, the number of bodies found has escalated to 283 at a mass grave located in Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
This discovery follows the withdrawal of the Israeli military from the site, which had been previously flagged for a series of severe violations.
In a press conference, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, highlighted the urgent need for a thorough investigation at all gravesites, conducted in a reliable and independent manner.
Dujarric responded to inquiries about the grim find of at least 283 bodies, stressing the importance of a ceasefire to end the conflict in Gaza.
Dujarric also emphasized the need to enable humanitarian workers to have increased access to Gaza, the protection of hospitals, and the release of detainees.
He remarked that the reports about the mass grave are profoundly concerning.
The fate of approximately 2,000 individuals who were in Nasser Hospital at the time of its breach by Israeli forces in February remains unknown.
Since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on October 7th, the death toll in Gaza has surged to 34,151, with 77,084 injured, the majority being children and women.
