The United Nations (UN) humanitarian teams have urgently dispatched life-saving aid to communities ravaged by deadly floods in northeastern Afghanistan.
According to the UN’s official website, the sudden floods in the region claimed the lives of at least 300 people, including 51 children.
Many others were injured, and these numbers are expected to rise as further reports come in, UN agencies reported.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his condolences to the victims’ families. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, stated, “The United Nations and its partners in Afghanistan are coordinating with the de facto authorities (Taliban) to swiftly assess needs and deliver emergency assistance,” while also wishing a speedy recovery to the injured and extending condolences to the bereaved families.
Most victims were from Baghlan province, where intense rainfall destroyed an estimated 3,000 homes, inundated agricultural lands, swept away livestock, closed schools, and damaged health centres.
The provinces of Takhar and Badakhshan were also affected, with preliminary reports indicating that at least 300 homes were damaged, as per UNICEF.
Dr. Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, said, “UNICEF and its partners on the ground are doing their utmost to provide swift relief to affected families and communities.”
He extended condolences to families mourning the loss of loved ones and mentioned that a mobile health and nutrition team supported by UNICEF was sent out, with teams on the ground to assist in further assessments.
Oyewale added, “The heavy rains and subsequent floods have disrupted lives and pose a significant risk to children in the affected provinces.
As families cope with loss, maintaining access to clean drinking water, health services, and protection is crucial.
As always, UNICEF stands with the children and people of Afghanistan during these challenging times.”
UNICEF has sent 450 family kits, 500 hygiene kits, 476 blankets for adults and children, and 100 sets of clothing, alongside support from other UN agencies and partners.
Meanwhile, the UN Migration Agency is distributing aid packages that include temporary shelters, essential non-food items, solar power units, clothing, and tools to repair their damaged shelters.
