The United Nations Security Council will hold a series of important sessions this week to address various tensions in the Middle East, including the situations in Palestine, Libya, and Sudan, along with other pressing global issues. According to a statement issued by the Security Council on Monday, a semi-annual briefing on the Great Lakes region will take place on Tuesday, featuring contributions from Huang Xia, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to the region, and a civil society representative. This will be followed by closed consultations.

On Wednesday, the Security Council will hold a bi-monthly briefing and consultations on Libya, led by Stephanie Koury, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Support Mission in Libya, along with a civil society representative. Additionally, this week the Council will hold a session on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, under the agenda item “The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question,” at the request of Algeria and Slovenia.

Later in the week, on Thursday, the Council will host a special meeting involving Somalia, the African Union, and the UN Secretariat to discuss recent updates from the Secretary-General regarding the structure and funding options for the proposed African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia, as outlined in Resolution 2748 dated August 15.

Furthermore, the Council members will continue to deliberate over a draft resolution on Myanmar distributed by the United Kingdom. The Council is also monitoring the situation in Sudan, and members are currently negotiating a press statement calling for an immediate cessation of fighting through dialogue in the most vulnerable areas of Sudan.

Additionally, the Council is reviewing a presidential statement proposed by Russia concerning the September 26, 2022, explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea. On Monday, informal consultations will take place regarding the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and on Wednesday, the Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict will conduct informal consultations to finalize conclusions on the Secretary-General’s report on children and armed conflict in Sudan.

Finally, on Friday, the Council’s Military Staff Committee will hold a formal meeting to discuss the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including the operations of the UN stabilization mission in the country.
