A high-level meeting was held at the headquarters of the Department of Relations and International Cooperation in Tripoli between components of the Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity and the European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) in Libya.
The meeting also included a distinguished delegation from the European Union (EU) Commission.
The Libyan side was led by Major General Nour El-Din Abu Bakr Abu Jurida, Director of the Department of Relations and International Cooperation, with representatives from internal security agencies, the Criminal Investigation Department, the Counter-Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Department, and the Border Guard in attendance.
Additionally, representatives from the General Directorate of Training, the Department of European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the Arab and International Criminal Police Office were present.
The meeting focused on discussing ways to enhance cooperation to bolster Libyan security capabilities in border security and combat organized crime and illegal immigration.
Mohamed Al-Menfi, head of the Libyan Presidential Council, and Stephanie Khoury, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), recently agreed on the necessity of reactivating the security track within the framework of the Libyan dialogue through the Joint Military Committee (5+5).
Both parties looked for ways to make progress towards the preliminary phase of elections and advance the political process amidst the current stalemate.
Al-Menfi expressed his appreciation for the role of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the ongoing efforts of the UN mission in Libya in collaboration with the Presidential Council.
This move marks a significant step in advancing the African country‘s political dialogue and stabilizing the region.
In recent remarks, Khoury affirmed that UNSMIL is committed to supporting the conduct of inclusive, free, and fair national elections to restore legitimacy to Libyan institutions.
