The United Nations warned on Thursday that Sudan is facing a “perfect storm” of hunger, displacement, and disease outbreaks, which could lead to a catastrophic loss of life if urgent action is not taken.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stressed the need for immediate aid funding to prevent devastating consequences.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is racing to provide food aid to 8.4 million people by the end of the year, having already reached 5 million.
Meanwhile, UNICEF is delivering life-saving nutrition to 215,000 malnourished children and clean water to 6.6 million people. However, humanitarian access remains limited, worsening the crisis.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is also struggling with funding shortages as it supports the millions displaced by the conflict, with many crossing into neighboring countries. Despite a $1.5 billion regional refugee response plan, only a fraction of the necessary funds have been raised.
The ongoing crisis will be discussed next week at the UN General Assembly, as UN agencies urge the international community to provide additional support.
