The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, is scheduled to visit Libya this Sunday to discuss the country’s ongoing situation with political figures.
According to reports from Al-Wasat news, DiCarlo’s visit will last from September 8 to 11, during which she will meet with key stakeholders.
The UN released a statement on Friday, stating that DiCarlo will focus on exploring ways to support Libyan and international efforts aimed at revitalizing the political process.
The ultimate goal is to restore peace, stability, and unity in the conflict-torn nation.
Her visit comes at a crucial time, as the UN mission in Libya is working to resolve the crisis surrounding the management of the Central Bank of Libya.
Last week, the UN facilitated separate meetings with representatives from the House of Representatives, the High Council of State, and the Presidential Council.
These discussions concluded with representatives from Parliament requesting a five-day extension, which ends on September 9, to continue consultations regarding the bank’s future.
Both the House of Representatives and the High Council of State affirmed their commitment to the agreements reached during the meetings held on September 4 and 5.
They expressed their intent to take all necessary steps to appoint a new Governor and Board of Directors for the Central Bank within 30 days of the final agreement.
These agreements were signed by Hadi Al-Saghir, a member of the House of Representatives, and Abduljalil Al-Shaoush from the High Council of State.
Libya has recently experienced a deepening political crisis, primarily driven by disputes over control of the Central Bank.
This conflict has further strained the already fragile political situation, with the country’s various factions struggling to find common ground.
DiCarlo’s visit is seen as a significant step toward bridging these divisions and reigniting the stalled political process.
The international community remains hopeful that this engagement will lead to a peaceful resolution to Libya’s ongoing crisis.
