In a significant presentation at the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), held in Paris alongside the 2024 Olympic Games, Egypt unveiled its bid to host the 2027 African Games.
The delegation, led by Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, and key figures from the Egyptian Olympic Committee, including President Yasser Idris and Secretary General Sherif El-Erian, made a compelling case for Egypt’s readiness to host the games.
The proposal highlighted the state-of-the-art facilities at the Egypt Olympic City in the new administrative capital, which garnered widespread admiration from attendees.
The meeting saw strong representation from Egypt, with additional presence from Alaa Youssef, Egypt’s ambassador to France, and Dr. Hassan Mustafa, President of ANOCA’s Ethics Committee.
Dr. Ashraf Sobhy was honoured during the assembly for his significant contributions to Egypt’s efforts in hosting numerous African championships, including spearheading the 2027 African Games bid.
The session, chaired by Algerian Mustapha Berraf, was attended by representatives from 54 African nations.
Discussions also covered the organization of the upcoming African Games and the African Youth Beach Games scheduled in Guinea, emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to enhancing sports across the continent.
Mohamed El-Sayed secured Egypt’s first medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning the bronze in the épée fencing event, following his victory over Hungary’s Tibor Andrashfi in the third-place match on Sunday.
El-Sayed clinched an 8-7 victory in overtime after an extensive video review. He had previously lost in the semifinals to French fencer Yannick Borel, who will later compete against Japan’s Kano Kuki for the gold medal on Sunday.
This marked the second medal for the Arab countries at the Paris Olympics and also the second in fencing competitions, following Tunisian Fares Ferjani’s silver in the Arab sword event he won on Saturday.
