UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Sunday that any attacks on international peacekeepers “could constitute a war crime.” This statement followed the incursion of two Israeli tanks through the gates of a United Nations peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon, operated by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This marks the latest accusation against Israel for violations and recent assaults on international peacekeeping missions.
The spokesperson for the UN, Stéphane Dujarric, emphasized: “UNIFIL peacekeepers remain stationed at all their sites, and the UN flag continues to fly.” He added, “The Secretary-General reiterated that UNIFIL personnel and facilities should never be targeted. Any attacks on peacekeepers violate international law, including humanitarian law, and could constitute war crimes.”
UNRWA has played a critical humanitarian role in Gaza, particularly since the onset of the recent conflict in October 2023. As the largest humanitarian agency in Gaza, it provides essential services, such as food distribution, healthcare, water, sanitation, and hygiene support. Over 1.9 million people have received food assistance, with multiple rounds of distribution covering nearly 90% of daily caloric needs. Additionally, UNRWA has been providing psychological support and medical services to displaced individuals, especially children and those with disabilities.
The agency also plays a major role in maintaining and rehabilitating water and sanitation facilities, offering clean water to displaced individuals and distributing hygiene kits to prevent the spread of diseases. Despite immense challenges, including the loss of more than 150 staff members, UNRWA continues its relief efforts, supporting over three-quarters of Gaza’s population, making its operations vital to preventing further humanitarian crises
