The United Nations has urged Houthi rebels in Yemen to implement the recent United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate halt to their attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
The spokesperson for the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, stated on Tuesday evening, “We are extremely concerned about the ongoing strikes.”
The United Nations resolution condemns more than 20 attacks carried out by the Houthis, disrupting one of the world’s major trade routes and causing shipping costs to rise significantly.
Dujarric mentioned that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, discussed the situation in the Red Sea and Gaza with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian on Monday.
He added that Guterres “reiterated his call for all parties to avoid any further escalation” in Yemen and to implement last week’s resolution.
Dujarric also stressed the need for greater humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza and the immediate release of all detainees.
He noted that the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, who is engaged in consultations with all parties, spoke with Ali Asghar Khaji, the Chief Adviser to the Iranian Foreign Minister, on Tuesday morning to discuss the importance of maintaining a conducive environment for constructive dialogue and ongoing coordinated regional efforts to achieve peace in Yemen.
Dujarric further mentioned that Grundberg and others provided a briefing to the UN Security Council on this matter in a closed session.
On their part, the Houthi group stated that these attacks are aimed at stopping the destructive Israeli aerial and ground aggression on the Gaza Strip.
