Mohamed Al-Menfi, head of the Libyan Presidential Council, and Stephanie Khoury, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), agreed on the necessity of reactivating the security track within the framework of the Libyan dialogue through the Joint Military Committee (5+5).
Both parties looked for ways to make progress towards the preliminary phase of elections and advance the political process amidst the current stalemate.
The talks emphasized the importance of reviving the security path via the (5+5) Committee framework and progressing the human rights track that emerged from the outcomes of the Berlin Conference under the signed protocol.
Al-Menfi expressed his appreciation for the role of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the ongoing efforts of the UN mission in Libya in collaboration with the Presidential Council.
This move marks a significant step in advancing Libya’s political dialogue and stabilizing the region.
In recent remarks, Khoury affirmed that UNSMIL is committed to supporting the conduct of inclusive, free, and fair national elections to restore legitimacy to Libyan institutions.
She added that the mission would continue to support a comprehensive national reconciliation process, the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement, the control of arms proliferation, and the improvement of human rights and rule of law conditions in the African nation.
Khoury highlighted the difficult living conditions faced by the Libyan people due to prolonged instability and underdevelopment, stating, “The Libyan people have suffered enough from the lack of stability and development.”
The official called on everyone to work towards the unity, sovereignty, security, and prosperity of Libya, suggesting that the time has come to put an end to their suffering.
Earlier this week, General Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan National Army, met with Libyan-appointed Prime Minister Osama Hamad at the army’s headquarters in Benghazi.
The meeting focused on ways the government can support the commission in fulfilling its duties and achieving upcoming elections.
