Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal confirmed on Wednesday that Ukraine is currently implementing unique energy infrastructure protection projects, previously unseen on a global scale. Shmyhal emphasized the key factors ensuring the stability of the energy sector within the nation.

Speaking at the Ukrainian Future Energy Forum, Shmyhal stated that the primary factor contributing to the stability of Ukraine’s energy sector is the nation’s air defense capabilities. “Today, Ukraine possesses a much-enhanced air defense system. Our air defense mechanism has become more comprehensive and experienced, and we are continually refining it. By winter, it will be stronger, more capable, and more effective,” he was quoted saying by the Ukrainian news agency “Ukrinform”.

Shmyhal highlighted that the second contributing factor is the depletion of Russia’s missile reserves. The third is a broad-scaled reform campaign being executed across energy facilities. He remarked, “To date, we have refurbished more than 80% of the main power networks.”

The Ukrainian Prime Minister elaborated that the fourth factor ensuring energy sector stability is the protection of energy facilities, reaffirming that Ukraine is pioneering protection projects that the world has never seen before.

Additionally, Shmyhal praised the systematic collaboration with international partners, noting that Ukraine received $2.3 billion for the restoration and protection of energy facilities.

It’s worth noting that “Ukrenergo”, the power operator in Ukraine, has previously affirmed that despite potential Russian attacks on energy facilities this winter, Ukraine’s power system will not collapse and will continue operating.

Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have remained heightened since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent conflict in Eastern Ukraine. In light of these tensions, the protection and stability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have become paramount.

The country has made significant strides in bolstering its defenses and ensuring the continuous supply of energy to its citizens, despite the looming threats. The recent measures, as highlighted by PM Denis Shmyhal, further attest to Ukraine’s commitment to safeguarding its critical assets and reinforcing its resilience in the energy domain.
