In a significant escalation of tensions, Ukraine’s air force reported on Saturday that Russia had launched 34 missiles overnight targeting energy sites.
Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 21 of the missiles, according to official statements.
Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko conveyed via Telegram that energy facilities in Dnipropetrovsk in the south, and Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv in the west, were among the locations struck. He noted that an engineer sustained injuries in the attacks.
DTEK, a private energy operator, disclosed that four of its thermal power plants suffered damage in the assault, with reports of casualties, though specifics were not provided.
This attack follows a recent incident where Russia targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, destroying one of its largest power plants and causing damage to others in a concerted missile and drone onslaught. The latest assault underscores the persistent threat to Ukraine’s vital energy facilities amid ongoing tensions between the two nations.
