In a humanitarian effort spearheaded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine has delivered 1,000 tons of flour to Gaza through Jordan as part of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative.
The handover ceremony took place in Amman, attended by Ukrainian Ambassador to Jordan, Myroslava Shcherbatiuk, along with diplomats from France, Austria, and Norway, and representatives from the World Food Programme (WFP).
Ambassador Shcherbatiuk emphasized the humanitarian nature of the initiative, expressing hope that the flour will provide essential food to the people of Gaza and demonstrate Ukraine’s solidarity with them.
She reiterated Ukraine’s support for a two-state solution, where both Palestine and Israel coexist peacefully and securely.
The shipment, which reached Gaza on July 18, 2024, is part of a larger humanitarian aid package.
According to the Ukrainian embassy in Amman, Palestine will receive a total of 7,000 tons of wheat flour and 750 tons of sunflower oil under the “Grain from Ukraine” program.
Despite facing ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine remains committed to supporting those in need worldwide.
Ambassador Shcherbatiuk highlighted Ukraine’s resilience and determination to assist war victims in Palestine, ensuring they do not suffer from hunger.
Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Ukraine’s unwavering support for those suffering globally, despite the country’s challenges.
The “Grain from Ukraine” initiative involves direct agricultural product purchases from Ukrainian companies, funded by participating countries, and distributed to those on the brink of famine.
Partners in the program allocate funds to purchase and ship grain to the most vulnerable populations free of charge.
Ukraine also contributes financially, despite its war-torn budget. The program is open to any country, NGO, or private company willing to join the humanitarian effort.
In addition, Ukraine has established the International Coordination Group to Prevent Hunger, comprising government representatives, companies, and charities dedicated to addressing global food insecurity.
This group aims to develop a unified global action plan to prevent the worsening of the food crisis.
The WFP, in collaboration with Ukraine and donor countries, identifies beneficiaries of Ukrainian grain, focusing on nations experiencing severe food shortages.
