The British newspaper “The Independent” has reported that the UK Home Office plans to spend £306 million on new detention centers designed to house up to a thousand asylum seekers.

According to the newspaper, British officials are actively seeking contractors to manage three immigrant detention centers amidst an “unprecedented increase in small boat crossings.”

A contract released by the British Home Office specified: “Given the unprecedented rise in small boat crossings in recent years, there has been a heightened demand for immigrant detention centers, and there is a requirement to expand their capacity.”

Two of the contracts have been earmarked for centers that will each accommodate 360 migrants at a cost of £108 million. Meanwhile, the third center is designed to house 300 migrants with a budget set at £90 million.

A spokesperson for the UK Home Office commented, “We are committed to removing foreign criminals and those who have no right to be in the UK.” They added, “Immigrant detention centers play a crucial role in securing our borders, and we have identified more solutions to extend our detention capabilities.”
