UEFA has charged Jude Bellingham with “violating the basic rules of decent conduct,” but the player will not face an immediate ban.
The England midfielder was under investigation for a gesture made during his celebration of a spectacular overhead kick against Slovakia in the last-16 tie last Sunday.
After scoring, Bellingham was seen shouting “Who else?!” to England fans.
Video footage then showed the Real Madrid forward kissing his hand and grabbing his crotch in what seemed to be a gesture towards the side of the pitch.
Facing accusations of disrespect towards the Slovakian bench or supporters, Bellingham clarified his actions on social media, tweeting: “An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”
The incident was reviewed by UEFA’s ethics and disciplinary inspector, who delivered their decision a day before England’s next match.
UEFA fined Bellingham €30,000 and suspended him for “one UEFA competition match for which he would otherwise be available for violating the basic rules of decent conduct.”
This suspension is not immediately enforced and is subject to a one-year probationary period starting from the decision date.
As a result, Gareth Southgate will have Bellingham available for the crucial quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday.
Bellingham could have faced a fine of up to €100,000 and a specified number of match suspensions.
Additionally, England’s Football Association was fined €10,000 for crowd disturbances and a further €1,000 for the lighting of fireworks during the game against Slovakia.
