Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), a leading global clean energy firm, celebrated the grid integration of its renewable energy projects in Uzbekistan, totaling 1.4 gigawatts (GW).
Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, in his address, emphasized the strong bilateral ties between the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan, particularly in renewable energy investment and development.
The newly connected projects comprise the Zarafshan wind farm and three solar projects in Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Sherabad, marking the region’s most extensive solar program.
Concurrently, at the event attended by Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Jamshid Khodjaev, Masdar inked a new deal with the country’s Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade.
This agreement paves the way for an additional 2 GW wind project and the implementation of 1,150 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage systems across five existing Masdar projects in Uzbekistan. This expansion elevates Masdar’s investment in the country to around $4 billion.
Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar, and COP28 President, highlighted the significance of these projects. He referenced the ambitious climate goals set at COP28, emphasizing the global commitment to tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030.
These developments in Uzbekistan are crucial to this global initiative and strengthen the collaboration between the UAE and Uzbekistan in meeting clean energy goals.
Uzbekistan, with its ample wind and solar resources, aims to achieve 7 GW of solar and 5 GW of wind capacity by the decade’s end.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi expressed pride in the company’s role in Uzbekistan’s clean energy journey, acknowledging the government’s trust and support.
The upcoming 2 GW wind project is expected to generate enough electricity for around 1 million homes and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 4 million tonnes annually.
