The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has outlined its key priorities for its presidency of the United Nations Security Council during the month of June.
The UAE, as the Council’s President, holds the responsibility of setting the Council’s Programme of Work in collaboration with other members, chairing Council meetings, and facilitating the adoption of resolutions and other Council initiatives.
During its presidency, the UAE has identified three main priorities: human fraternity, climate change, and peace and security cooperation between the United Nations and the League of Arab States.
These priorities will guide the Council’s discussions and actions throughout June, including a series of briefings, meetings, debates, consultations, and adoptions.
On 8 June, the UAE will host a high-level briefing focused on enhancing cooperation between the UN and the League of Arab States.
The event aims to emphasise the significance of Arab-led solutions to regional challenges and explore opportunities to strengthen collaboration between the two organizations.
Counter-terrorism, women and youth participation, and humanitarian responses to natural disasters will be among the critical priorities addressed.
Furthermore, the UAE plans to convene a ministerial-level open debate on 13 June, addressing the intersection of climate change, peace, and security.
Drawing on experiences from UN peacekeeping missions, post-conflict contexts, and cross-regional situations, the debate will highlight the impact of climate change on the Council’s mandate to uphold international peace and security.
The UAE’s presidency of the Security Council provides an important platform to address pressing global issues and foster international cooperation in pursuit of peace, stability, and sustainable development.
