A Tunisian court has sentenced Rached Ghannouchi, the leader of the Ennahda Movement, to one year in prison and three years of administrative supervision.
The Tunis Court of Appeals upheld a previous ruling that sentenced Ghannouchi to one year in prison and fined him 1,000 dinars. Additionally, the appeals court ordered that Ghannouchi be placed under administrative supervision for three years following the completion of his prison sentence.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed by a security unionist against Ghannouchi over allegations of glorifying and supporting terrorism. The charges relate to a eulogy he delivered in early 2023 for a movement leader in southern Tunisia, specifically concerning his use of the term “tyrants.”
Previously, Ghannouchi had been sentenced to 15 months in prison on appeal in this case. He subsequently appealed the verdict, leading the Court of Cassation to overturn the decision and refer the case back to the Tunis Court of Appeals for reconsideration.
