The Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the European Union (EU) for a strategic partnership to support investment in renewable energy, valued at €472.6 million.

In a statement, the ministry revealed that €472.6 million has been allocated, with €334.6 million provided as grants from the EU, to support the electricity interconnection project between Italy and Tunisia.

This project aims to enhance energy security and economic stability in North Africa, according to the Arab World News Agency.

Fatma Zohra Chayeb, the Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, emphasized that this project “will contribute to strengthening energy cooperation between Tunisia and Italy on a broader scale and achieving integration between electricity markets in North Africa and Europe.”

She highlighted the importance of this agreement in bolstering Tunisia’s relationship with the EU across various fields, particularly in developing energy transition programs.

EU Ambassador to Tunisia, Marcus Cornaro, was quoted in the statement, saying that the electricity interconnection project would ensure the stability of the electricity grid on both sides of the Mediterranean and enable the export of electricity when possible.

This strategic partnership marks a significant step towards enhancing renewable energy infrastructure in Tunisia, fostering closer ties with the EU, and supporting the region’s overall economic and energy stability.
