Stefanos Tsitsipas, a professional tennis player from Greece, has addressed the controversy surrounding his comments about Nick Kyrgios during Wimbledon in 2022. Tsitsipas stated that his remarks were “misinterpreted” and denied any racist intent after they were perceived as such on social media.

During a fiery third-round match at Wimbledon, Tsitsipas referred to Kyrgios’ approach to tennis as “uneducated” and mentioned that he brought an “NBA basketball attitude” to the sport. These comments were featured in the new Netflix series, Break Point.

In response to the backlash, Tsitsipas, who is currently ranked fifth in the world, took to Facebook to clarify his intentions. He expressed that there had been an “unfortunate misunderstanding” that distorted the true meaning of his words and refuted any accusations of racism.

Tsitsipas stated, “I want to emphasise that I harbour no prejudice towards anyone based on their background, ethnicity, or interests. I deeply regret if my words were misinterpreted or caused offense, as that was never my intention.”

He further clarified that his previous remarks about Kyrgios were not meant to belittle his intelligence or abilities. Instead, Tsitsipas intended to express his perspective on certain aspects of Kyrgios’ playing style, drawing comparisons to the passion and intensity often associated with basketball.

Tsitsipas’ statement aims to set the record straight and address the controversy that arose from his comments, assuring that his intentions were not rooted in racism or prejudice.
