A raging fire that erupted in electrical storage facilityes in the Krimiya district south of the capital Tripoli has spiraled out of control, engulfing surrounding areas and posing a severe threat to dozens of nearby homes. There are growing concerns that the blaze could spread to nearby gas lines.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire, which ignited on Sunday evening, spread rapidly and extensively in all directions, reaching heights of tens of meters. Loud explosions were heard as firefighters battled to extinguish the inferno, which has reportedly caused injuries.
The persistent fires prompted the Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeiba, to issue orders for the forced evacuation of residents from homes near the burning areas and the provision of ambulances. The Chairman of the General Electricity Company also called for the formation of committees to investigate the cause of the fire and submit a detailed report.
Official authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire, which has created a noticeable cloud of smoke over a large part of the capital Tripoli, or the extent of the damage caused. However, the Electrical Police Administration stated in a statement that excavation operations caused the fire, explaining that the presence of heavy machinery uprooting trees near the station caused a malfunction in the electricity cable, leading to the burning of cells inside the station.
In the same context, the General Electricity Company addressed the office of the Attorney General to open an investigation into the fire incident in the company’s stores in the Krimiya area and to determine the reasons that led to its outbreak and whether it was intentional or not.
