Despite the bloody conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan that erupted over a year ago, thousands of Sudanese continue to flee the country daily. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has confirmed that large numbers of Sudanese are crossing the country’s borders every day.
On Sunday, the UNHCR shared figures on ‘X’ showing a significant number of displaced persons gathering in Adré, Chad, near the Sudanese border. The agency also reiterated its call for an immediate cessation of violence in Sudan.
Over the past months, the UNHCR has issued multiple warnings about the dire conditions faced by those displaced from the conflict zones. These individuals are struggling with shortages of food, medical supplies, and even clean drinking water.
The United Nations has also warned that the food crisis in Sudan could become “the largest of its kind ever recorded” and described the situation as “near catastrophic.”
It should be noted that since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been plunged into a deadly conflict led by Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. This has resulted in the deaths of thousands and the displacement of approximately eight million others.
