The Iraqi Directorate of Intelligence and Security announced on Thursday a significant breakthrough in national security efforts, capturing two individuals in Baghdad wanted for terrorism and the illegal trade of antiquities.
In an official statement relayed by the Iraqi National News Agency “NINA,” the Directorate revealed that its Baghdad intelligence and security units, operating under the Ministry of Defense, succeeded in apprehending the suspects in the Al-Taji district and Al-Saydiya area. The arrests were executed under warrant, citing provisions 1/4 for terrorism and 44 for antiquities in the Iraqi legal system.
During the operation, security forces discovered and seized historical artifacts, including a panel and seals, in the possession of one of the accused. These items were confiscated, and the individuals involved were transferred to the appropriate investigative authorities to complete legal proceedings.
In related news, Iraqi security forces reported the detention of an ISIS element in the Qayyarah sub-district, south of Mosul, further intensifying their campaign against remnants of the terrorist organization in the region.
Additionally, a security source disclosed an attempted drone attack on the “Harir” base, which hosts American forces near Erbil Airport. Details on the extent of the damage have yet to be clarified.
These developments highlight the ongoing efforts of the Iraqi security apparatus to combat terrorism and preserve cultural heritage through rigorous enforcement against the trade of illegal artifacts. The successful operations against these criminal activities underscore Iraq’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens and protecting its rich historical legacy from the threats of terrorism and the shadowy networks of artifact smuggling. This assertive stance reinforces Iraq’s position in maintaining national security and contributing to the global fight against illegal activities undermining cultural and historical integrity.
