Syrian Foreign Minister Dr. Faisal Mekdad stated that Western countries are not fulfilling their commitments in disarmament and arms control, particularly nuclear, insisting on a path that aims to maintain their military dominance at the expense of the stability and existence of other nations and peoples.
Addressing a disarmament conference in Geneva via video, Mekdad emphasized that the conference presents an exceptional opportunity for member states to renew their commitments in disarmament and arms control, especially in the nuclear field, to spare humanity the woes of wars.
Mekdad highlighted how Israeli aggression against the besieged Palestinian people in Gaza wouldn’t have persisted for five months without Western support for the occupation and providing it with political cover.
He criticized Western countries for blatantly ignoring Israel’s possession of nuclear capabilities outside the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, remaining silent on officials’ statements about the possibility of using nuclear bombs against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Mekdad affirmed that Syria’s experience with the Chemical Weapons Convention revealed the dangerous polarization and Western dominance over its technical work, targeting Syria through mechanisms beyond the convention’s jurisdiction lacking neutrality and professionalism.
The Western behavior, according to Mekdad, has exacerbated the threat of chemical terrorism, encouraging terrorist organizations to possess, develop, and use chemical weapons against Syrian civilians and the Syrian Arab Army, with the West ignoring these actions and adopting terrorists’ narrative as a pretext for military aggression against Syria.
Syria calls for support for Russia’s initiative at the disarmament conference to formulate an international convention to suppress chemical and biological terrorism, considering preventing terrorist organizations from using weapons of mass destruction a necessity for global security.
The Syrian Foreign Minister stressed that his country will work alongside serious member states to activate the role of the disarmament conference, particularly the nuclear aspect, expressing hope for sincere political will to implement the conference’s mandate and respect its procedures and principles.
