Swiss authorities have detained a young individual following the severe stabbing of an Orthodox Jewish man on Zurich’s streets, as announced by the police on Sunday.
The incident, which took place on Saturday evening, is believed to have been motivated by antisemitism, according to a police statement.
Following a disturbance reported at 9:35 p.m. involving multiple individuals, initial investigations suggest the assailant, a 15-year-old Swiss national, inflicted critical injuries on the 50-year-old victim using a stabbing instrument. The suspect was apprehended at the crime scene.
In response to the attack, police have heightened security measures around locations linked to the Jewish community, a move made in collaboration with Jewish organizations.
The Swiss Organization of Jewish Communities has expressed its profound disturbance over the assault, noting the rarity of such violent incidents against Jews in Switzerland.
The organization highlighted a noticeable uptick in physical attacks against Jews since October 7, despite the community having been free from such severe assaults for the last twenty years.
This incident is part of a broader surge in antisemitic incidents across Europe, particularly after the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas on October 7, which saw militants launching attacks in southern Israel.
This period has also seen a significant increase in the death toll in the Gaza Strip and isolated attacks on Jewish individuals in other European countries, such as the recent assault on a man wearing a Jewish skullcap outside a Paris synagogue.
