A number of Sudanese asylum seekers in South Korea organized a demonstration in front of Seoul Station on August 23, demanding that the authorities grant them humanitarian asylum due to the devastating war in their home country.
The participants held banners highlighting the scale of the tragedy that Sudanese people are enduring as a result of the war, which has led to the displacement of more than 8 million Sudanese citizens abroad in search of safety.
The demonstrators called on “the United Nations, the international community, and South Korean authorities to consider the magnitude of the humanitarian disaster in Sudan and to provide the necessary aid.” They emphasized that they “will continue to organize peaceful protests to make their voices heard by the Korean public and authorities, urging responsible entities to find a solution to their urgent issue.”
In Sudan, fighting broke out in mid-April 2023 between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is also the head of the Sovereign Council, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by his former ally and deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. The war has spread across large areas of the country, resulting in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
A UN-backed report in June indicated that the conflict has forced more than one-fifth of the population to flee, while nearly 25 million people, over half of Sudan’s population, are facing “acute food insecurity.”
