Former Sudanese Prime Minister, Abdalla Hamdok, stated on Monday that he has urgently requested a meeting with Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces Commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemeti) to discuss ways to end the war.
In his statement on the X platform, Hamdok revealed he had sent two written requests to Burhan and Dagalo, representing the Coordination of Democratic Forces (Taqadum), to facilitate this consultation.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces erupted last April following weeks of tension due to disagreements over plans to integrate the Rapid Support Forces into the army. This happened while the military and civilian parties were finalizing an internationally supported political process.
Sources from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a semi-regional African organization based in Djibouti, informed Al Arabiya and Al Hadath two days ago that consultations are underway to schedule a meeting between Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces Commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The meeting is expected to occur this week without preconditions from either side to cease fire and end the war in Sudan.
Burhan has informed IGAD of his agreement to meet with Hemeti, provided “the discussion is confined to withdrawing from cities and ceasing fire.”
Reports indicate that Acting Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq delivered a written message to the Prime Minister of Djibouti, the President of IGAD, through the Djiboutian Ambassador to Morocco, at the Arab Forum held in Marrakech last week. The message conveyed Burhan’s readiness to meet Hemeti under certain conditions.
This follows Burhan’s announcement in a military base speech in the Red Sea state, agreeing to negotiate with the Rapid Support Forces but refusing any peace agreement that humiliates the Sudanese armed forces and people. He reaffirmed the military’s strength and commitment to Sudan’s security and vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the fall of Wad Madani city.
