In a significant development from Sudan, Abuagla Keikal, the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the state of Al-Jazeera, has surrendered to the Sudanese Army along with a significant portion of his forces, known as “Shield of Al-Batana.”
This move marks a turning point in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, which has intensified since the escalation of hostilities in late 2023.
Keikal, who was appointed commander of the First Infantry Division in Al-Jazeera in December 2023, had been a key figure in the RSF’s control over the region.
His forces, which primarily operated in the Batana area, faced numerous conflicts, particularly with the group led by Commander Qaja.
These tensions arose from allegations of human rights abuses and attacks on civilians in the region, many of whom were related to Keikal.
The surrender of Keikal and his forces came after two months of negotiations between the Sudanese Intelligence Service and the commander.
The decision to lay down arms is seen as a major blow to the RSF, which has been accused of internal divisions. Keikal’s alleged betrayal and his cooperation with the SAF have only deepened the rift within the RSF leadership.
This development is part of a broader power struggle in Sudan, which has seen both military factions fighting for dominance since April 2023.
The situation remains volatile, with humanitarian concerns mounting as the conflict has displaced millions and exacerbated food shortages.
