Five states in Sudan implemented stringent security measures, including curfews and prohibitions on citizen gatherings, in response to heightened tensions and violence.
Security forces in various cities have also conducted extensive arrest campaigns, affecting numerous civilians.
These actions follow the rapid incursion of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) into several areas of the Gezira state in central Sudan, leading to clashes with the Sudanese army near the city of Wad Madani, the state capital.
The military operations by the RSF have resulted in the exodus of many residents of Madani and displaced persons from Khartoum residing in city shelters.
The Gezira state government imposed an emergency order enforcing curfews, banning gatherings, and authorizing the seizure of vehicles suspected of violating emergency orders. This also includes granting regular forces the authority to restrict or regulate the movement of people and vehicles within their jurisdiction.
In Port Sudan, the administrative capital of Sudan, military sources informed the “Sudan Tribune” that the security and military intelligence services carried out a wide arrest campaign targeting individuals allegedly allied with the RSF.
Additionally, security forces in Al-Duwaym city in the White Nile state arrested several individuals in the city market.
The acting governor of Sennar state, Tawfiq Mohamed, declared a state of emergency, imposing a curfew from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. He directed the formation of a security cell comprising military, police, and security agencies and ordered the confiscation of all unlicensed motorcycles and vehicles.
The governor, after a meeting at the headquarters of the 17th Infantry Division in Singa, emphasized his government’s readiness and vigilance at the state‘s entrances and exits, vowing not to tolerate any rebellion or conspiracy against the militia.
In the Northern state, the acting governor Abdin Awad Allah issued a decree banning curfews from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., prohibiting all types of gatherings, and ordering the closure of shops, cafes, and parks during these hours.
The decree also restricts the movement of motorcycles within the state borders, except for regular forces, and prohibits the firing of gunshots during social events or otherwise. The decree also prohibits the construction of any stalls or shelters on main roads.
