South Africa’s Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor, has declared a firm stance against citizens engaging in military service with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), stating they will face arrest upon their return to the country.
Speaking at a conference in Pretoria focused on solidarity with Palestinians, Minister Pandor emphasized the government’s determination to take action against South Africans involved in the IDF. “I have already issued a statement alerting those who are South African and who are fighting alongside or in the Israeli Defense Forces. We are ready. When you come home, we’re going to arrest you,” Pandor asserted.
This announcement follows a prior warning issued by South Africa’s Foreign Ministry in December. The ministry cited alleged violations of international law by soldiers in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict, asserting that those involved could be prosecuted upon their return to South Africa.
According to the ministry’s regulations, South African citizens intending to participate in conflicts abroad, including service in the IDF, must obtain prior government approval. Furthermore, naturalized citizens engaging in such activities risk losing their South African nationality, as the country does not support or condone involvement in wars it does not endorse.
In response to concerns regarding potential repercussions for Israeli soldiers traveling abroad, particularly in countries hostile to the ongoing conflict, the IDF released a statement through Haaretz. The military stated that it is actively addressing security and legal risks associated with soldiers’ international travel, in collaboration with relevant government ministries.
South Africa’s unequivocal stance against its citizens serving in the IDF highlights the government’s commitment to upholding international law and its support for the Palestinian cause.
