Inter Miami has officially confirmed the signing of Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets, marking his reunion with former teammate Lionel Messi. The 34-year-old midfielder announced his departure from the La Liga champions in May, ending his 18-year tenure at the club.
Busquets will now join forces with Argentine forward Messi, 35, who recently revealed his move to Inter Miami from Paris St-Germain. The duo spent an impressive 13 seasons together in Barcelona, from 2008 to 2021. During this period, they achieved remarkable success, securing three Champions League trophies, eight La Liga titles, and six Copa del Rey titles.
Although reports suggest that Busquets received offers from Saudi Arabia, he ultimately chose to join the Miami-based team owned by David Beckham, just like Messi. The former Spain midfielder’s decision to join Inter Miami adds another experienced and talented player to the squad.
Throughout his career at Barcelona, Busquets amassed an impressive total of 722 appearances, making him the third-most capped player in the club’s history. In addition to his defensive contributions, Busquets also contributed 18 goals and 40 assists during his 15 years with the senior team.
Busquets initially joined Barcelona as a youth player in 2005, gradually progressing through the ranks to make his first-team debut in 2008 under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola, in a league match against Racing Santander.
The signing of Busquets strengthens Inter Miami’s squad and adds valuable experience and leadership to the team. The reunion of Busquets and Messi on the pitch will undoubtedly excite fans and create a sense of anticipation for the upcoming season.
