The UN Security Council expressed concern on Saturday about escalating tensions and military operations around El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur in Sudan.

In a press statement, council members voiced deep worries about an imminent attack by the Rapid Support Forces and their allied militias against El Fasher, which shelters hundreds of thousands of individuals fleeing violence from other regions.

The Security Council called on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, who have been in conflict since April 15, 2023, to cease the military buildup around El Fasher and take steps to de-escalate the situation while adhering to their obligations under international humanitarian law.

Security Council members reiterated their call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all UN member states to refrain from external interference and support efforts to achieve lasting peace.

They also reminded all parties to the conflict and UN member states of their obligations related to the arms embargo.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has repeatedly warned of the attack on El Fasher, which serves as a crucial humanitarian hub for the United Nations.

Notably,

The Kuwaiti Relief Society announced on Tuesday the launch of the first airlift mission to provide aid to Sudan, carrying 40 tons of relief and medical supplies.

According to the official Kuwaiti news agency, the mission departed from Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base heading towards Port Sudan Airport, carrying essential supplies including ambulances to assist displaced persons.

The agency quoted Omar Al-Thuwaini, the deputy director of the society, stating that the flight is part of the “Fazaa for Sudan” campaign. This initiative involves collaboration with eight Kuwaiti charitable organizations and institutions, aiming to deliver necessary support to those affected by the ongoing war, which has persisted for over a year.

Al-Thuwaini praised the concerted efforts of various official bodies, including the Ministries of Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Information, which facilitated the successful launch of this crucial Kuwaiti airlift to Sudan.

He also commended the role of charitable institutions in joint humanitarian efforts that contributed significantly to the “Fazaa for Sudan” campaign.
