King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has successfully utilized robotics to implant electrical monitoring chips within the brain of a patient suffering from stubborn epilepsy resistant to conventional treatments.

This revolutionary procedure aims to identify epileptic focal points within the brain, enabling their subsequent removal. This cutting-edge medical endeavor marks the first of its kind in the Middle East.

According to the Saudi Press Agency “SPA,” the robot-assisted technique minimizes surgical intervention by creating multiple holes, each no larger than 2 millimeters, in the skull to implant the electrical monitoring chips.

This process measures brain activity from within the head and diagnoses the regions where epileptic focal points arise. The robot technology proves to be superior to the conventional “Leksell frame” method in calculating necessary measurements and pinpointing accurate hole placements, a process that usually demands more time and effort.

The decision to employ robotics in epilepsy surgery is attributed to the robot’s exceptional precision in locating epileptic focal points, the expedited procedure duration, and its significantly higher safety profile compared to traditional techniques.

This advancement not only enhances patient outcomes but also reduces recovery periods and the occurrence of patient complications.

Furthermore, “SPA” emphasizes that robotic surgery represents a contemporary medical trend at the world’s leading medical centers. It empowers physicians to perform complex procedures with precision, flexibility and enhanced control.

The reduced invasiveness of robotic techniques contributes to shortened recovery periods and lowered rates of patient complications.
