The Saudi Arabian Embassy in Damascus has resumed its consular services from its temporary location at the “Four Seasons” hotel after a 12-year hiatus.
According to local media sources, the Saudi Embassy in Damascus resumed its operations yesterday, Wednesday, from its temporary location at the “Four Seasons” hotel in the heart of the capital.
The sources shared a photo of an announcement in front of the embassy’s temporary location, declaring the commencement of operations from Sunday to Thursday, from 9 am to 3 pm.
The diplomatic relationship between Saudi Arabia and Syria has seen significant shifts over the past decade.
The closure of the Saudi Embassy in Damascus in 2012 was part of a broader withdrawal of ambassadors and diplomatic staff by several Arab countries in response to the Syrian government’s violent crackdown on protests during the early stages of the Syrian Civil War.
However, recent years have witnessed a gradual normalization of relations between the two countries.
In December 2021, Saudi Arabia and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding to reopen their respective embassies, signaling a thaw in relations.
The reopening of the Saudi Embassy in Damascus marks an important step in the normalization process between the two nations.
The temporary location at the “Four Seasons” hotel allows the embassy to resume its consular services while preparations are made for the official reopening of its permanent facilities in Abu Rumana neighborhood for the embassy and Mezzeh neighborhood for the consulate building. This move underscores the desire of both Saudi Arabia and Syria to reestablish diplomatic ties and enhance cooperation in various fields.
