In a significant move reflecting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has greenlit an international Islamic conference in Mecca.
Titled “Strengthening Ties with Global Religious Affairs and Fatwa Authorities,” the event is spearheaded by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance and is scheduled for the 26th to 27th of the ongoing month of Muharram.
The summit is poised to be a landmark gathering, with 150 esteemed scholars and muftis from a diverse representation of 85 countries. Over an intensive two-day schedule comprising seven sessions, the discussions will pivot around themes such as moderation, extremism, societal decay, terrorism, and the imperative of fostering tolerance and harmonious coexistence among different communities. The Saudi Press Agency, SPA, corroborated the details of the event on Wednesday.
At the heart of the conference lies a multifaceted objective. It underscores the necessity of nurturing robust connections and cohesive collaborations among religious authorities worldwide.
By promoting the values enshrined in the Holy Quran and the teachings of the Prophet, the summit endeavors to spotlight the ideals of moderation, balance, and the importance of shielding societies from divisive ideologies and extremist views.
Another pivotal goal is to accentuate the Kingdom’s pioneering role in promulgating Islamic values, championing interfaith dialogue, and its ongoing efforts in combating religious extremism, thereby safeguarding societal values and promoting growth and prosperity in diverse spheres.
The conference’s itinerary is structured around seven pivotal themes. These encapsulate the endeavors of global religious entities in serving and uplifting the Muslim community, the importance of fortifying Islamic unity, and fostering enhanced communication between these entities.
The discourse will also center on the pivotal role of the Quran and the Prophet’s teachings in establishing moderation and a balanced perspective. Furthermore, the summit will delineate strategies to counter radicalism, terrorism, and the challenges of atheism and societal degradation.
